£2 Bus Fare Cap – what is it and when does it end?

Published

on

The £2 bus fare cap is a discounted travel scheme offering up to 86% off bus fares across England.

It has been in place since January and will now run until 30th June after an additional £75 million investment from the government. The cap means passengers can save an average of 30% on a standard ticket and more than 80% on some longer routes.

The discount applies to single fares on more than 5000 routes across 140 operators outside of London.

The cap was brought in to tackle the cost of living and to encourage more people to use public transport which so far has worked with 11% of respondents to a survey done by Transport Focus saying they use the bus to travel more now than they ever have done due to the ticket prices.

Roads Minister Richard Holden said, “Bus travel should be accessible and affordable for everyone. We know that people are struggling with rising costs, which is why we’re extending the £2 bus fare cap and continuing to put money back into passengers’ pockets.”

“This will help to ensure people can get around easily, no matter where they live – connecting them with work, education, doctors’ appointments as well as friends and families – in turn strengthening communities and growing local economies.”

Under the scheme, single local bus tickets are capped at £2, saving an average of 80p on bus fares. On some routes, the savings are much higher with the Lancaster to Kendall route being discounted by £12.50.

Graham Vidler, chief executive of the Confederation of Passenger Transport, said: “The continuation of the £2 fare cap is a welcome boost for passengers during a cost-of-living crisis, reminding people buses are a stress-free, affordable, and environmental option for work, education, appointments, leisure or to see loved ones.”

“Alongside low fares, passengers need the government to continue to invest in bus services to help maintain connectivity across England, no matter where you live.”

David Bradford, managing director of National Express West Midlands, said more than three million of its passengers had taken advantage of the scheme so far. He added: “It’s fantastic to see that the government recognises the important role bus services have on local communities, not only to help people travel more affordably or access work, but also reduces congestion and emissions on our roads. We hope that news of this extension will encourage even more people to ditch their cars and switch to buses to get around.”

VAR official PUNISHED after Champions League PSG vs Newcastle howler

Newcastle VAR ref removed

Following a contentious late penalty awarded to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) during their 1-1 draw against Newcastle, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) official involved in the decision has been replaced for an upcoming Champions League fixture. Tomasz Kwiatkowski, the Polish VAR official on duty at Parc des Princes, deemed a handball by Newcastle’s Tino Livramento, leading to Kylian Mbappe converting a 98th-minute penalty, salvaging a point for PSG managed by Luis Enrique.

This outcome potentially affects the Champions League group standings significantly, as PSG retains their second position, edging two points ahead of Newcastle, with one group game remaining. The penalty call didn’t originate from referee Szymon Marciniak but was reversed after Kwiatkowski prompted him to review the incident on the VAR screen.

Originally slated for VAR duty in the upcoming Real Sociedad versus RB Salzburg clash, Kwiatkowski has been replaced, according to reports. The replacement for the Polish official hasn’t been disclosed yet. Kwiatkowski, 45, frequently officiates in Poland’s top football league and possesses experience in European competitions.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe expressed dissatisfaction with the VAR decision, emphasizing its timing and impact, stating, “I feel it is a poor decision and it’s hugely frustrating for us, as you know how little time there is left in the game. There is nothing we can do about it now.”

For Newcastle to secure a spot in the last 16 of the Champions League, they must defeat AC Milan at St James’ Park on the final matchweek while hoping PSG doesn’t secure a victory against Borussia Dortmund.
