Diego Carlos had “mental comings and goings” about a potential move to Newcastle United, according to Sevilla sports director Monchi, as the La Liga club prepares for a summer approach from the Magpies.
The Sevilla Captain joined the club in 2019, from French club Nantes.
Carlos has made over 120 appearances and won the Europa League with them in 2020, defeating Inter Milan, 3-2.
Manchester City, Arsenal, and Chelsea have all expressed interest in signing him, but it was Newcastle who tried to sign the defender in January after weeks of transfer talks.
The Magpies were hoping to make an impression during their first transfer window under the ownership of a Saudi-led consortium, and it is thought that they made numerous unsuccessful bids for Carlos.
Their original interest in the centre-back was snuffed out in the final days of the window when they switched their focus to a deal for Brighton defender Dan Burn.
However, at the end of the season, the Magpies are set to make another attempt to sign Carlos.
Chelsea tried to sign Carlos’ centre-back partner, Jules Kounde, in the summer.
Monchi discussed Newcastle’s recent move for Carlos and stated that the bids had a positive impact on one of their main players, he said:
“Newcastle’s effort for Diego Carlos has been very strong,” he told La Colina de Nervion.
“They really went for it, but the club had an idea, a scenario, and they didn’t budge from that.
“Their offer was important, respectful, and even Diego has had his mental comings and goings, but he has ended up satisfied.”
