The scrutiny over Sandro Tonali’s activities after his high-profile £55 million move to Newcastle has escalated, with both the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) and the Football Association (FA) delving into a potential breach of betting regulations. The 23-year-old midfielder is facing repercussions after admitting to a gambling issue, resulting in a 10-month ban by the FIGC. This ban will sideline him for the remainder of the Premier League season and Euro 2024, coupled with an eight-month rehabilitation program and mandatory public appearances in Italy.

While the FIGC took action in October, the FA has now initiated its own investigation to ascertain if Tonali continued gambling post his transfer to Newcastle, potentially falling under their jurisdiction. If found culpable, Tonali might encounter further penalties. The FA is particularly concerned with determining whether he wagered on matches, possibly including those involving his new club, during the initial stages of the current season.

Newcastle, where Tonali moved from AC Milan to join Eddie Howe’s squad, is also actively participating in the inquiry. The club’s director of football, Dan Ashworth, expressed shock at the ban, emphasizing the club’s full cooperation with all relevant entities. However, the ramifications of Tonali’s ban are significant for Newcastle, leaving them short in midfield and prompting consideration of temporary reinforcements from the Saudi Pro League, potentially via loan signings.

Notably, the Public Investment Fund (PIF), which holds a majority stake in Newcastle, also controls prominent Saudi clubs such as Al-Ittihad, Al-Ahli, Al-Nassr, and Al-Hilal. During the summer, all these clubs secured European midfield signings, raising eyebrows regarding the potential connections and implications in the ongoing investigation. Newcastle has not ruled out legal action, given the impact of Tonali’s absence and the necessity to bolster their midfield, especially with the January transfer window still a couple of months away.
