Former Sunderland boss Jack Ross sacked by Hibernian following defeat to Livingston

Former Black Cats manager Jack Ross has been sacked by Hibernian following the teams rotten run which has seen them drop to ninth in the Scottish Premiership

The 1-0 defeat away to Livingston yesterday evening was the final straw for Ross as his side find themselves in a run of losing seven of their last nine league games. The game saw two red cards for the visitors in the closing stages as tensions seemed to boil over.

Ross’ sacking doesn’t come as much of a surprise and ends his spell at Hibs’ after becoming manager back in November 2019. Assistant head coach John Potter has also departed the club along with Ross.

His two-year tenure has had some good times.

Last campaign, the Edinburgh club finished third in the Scottish Premiership table for the first time in 16 years and reached the Scottish Cup final, only to lose to St Johnstone.

Hibernian got off to an excellent start this campaign. The club remained unbeaten until October 3rd where they lost for the first time against current league holders Rangers who came out 2-1 winners at Ibrox.

In his first season in charge of Sunderland, Ross led the club to the final of the League One play-offs following a 1–0 aggregate win over Portsmouth in the semi-finals. However, they went on to lose in the final to Charlton Athletic. He was sacked on 8 October 2019, as the club sat a disappointing sixth in the League One.

Following last nights defeat, Ross said:

“That level of performance was not good enough so the criticism should fall upon me. We were not good enough in all aspects of our play.”

He added:

“That all falls on my shoulders. I own it. It’s my team and the team that was on the park for 60 to 70 minutes is nowhere near good enough to win games in the Premiership.”

Sky Sports News have confirmed that youth coach Eddie May will take training on Thursday along with coach and former club captain David Gray.

With the assistance of coaches May and Craig Samson, Gray will take caretaker charge of Hibs’ trip to Paisley to face St Mirren on Saturday “pending a permanent appointment”.

Hibs’ chief executive Ben Kensell commented:

“Following the prolonged run of poor results in the league, the club has taken the tough decision to relieve Jack Ross of his duties.

“We thank Jack and John for all their hard work and dedication to the role, the club has moved forward under their leadership, and we will fondly remember some incredible highs like reaching two cup finals and finishing third in the league last season.”

He added:

“We wish them all the best in their future endeavours. The club will now look to appoint a new manager to take the club and this talented young squad forward and a further update will be provided in due course.”

Watch Yankuba Minteh score first goal for Feyenoord in 5-1 win on Sunday

Newcastle United loanee Yankuba Minteh has scored his first competitive goal for Feyenoord, scoring in Sunday’s 5-1 win over FC Utrecht.

After starting in their 6-1 win over Almere City last weekend, the Gambian teenager came off the bench and scored in stoppage time, rounding the goalkeeper and finishing calmly to seal another convincing victory for the Dutch champions.

This rounds off a positive few weeks for the 19-year-old winger, who was our first summer signing after sealing a £6m move from Danish side Odense.

Last month he helped spark a comeback draw away to local rivals Sparta Rotterdam, before starting his first Eredivisie game against Almere. Now, he’s come off the bench and bagged his first goal for the club.
