Gary Neville Full of Praise for St. James Park Atmosphere

After watching Newcastle United beat Manchester United on Sunday, Gary Neville made the claim of St. James atmosphere being the best he’s seen in the last 11 years.
Sunday’s match gave redemption and revenge for Newcastle United as goals from Joe Willock and Callum Wilson saw the magpies get a comfortable 2-0 win against Manchester United after tasting defeat to them in the Carabao Cup Final in February.
Joe Willock opened the scoring after the hour mark after seeing chances gone by in the match up until that point, Callum Wilson got the second and winning goal right at the end of the match in the 88th minute after capitalising on a wicked delivery from right-back Kieran Trippier.
That win sees Newcastle move into 3rd position in the Premier League having leapfrogged Manchester United as they race for top 4 and a place in the Champions League next season.
Speaking after the match for Sky Sports on his podcast, the Gary Neville Podcast, the former Manchester United man was full of praise for Eddie Howe’s team after their emphatic win and made the claim that the atmosphere for that match was the best he’s seen in his 11 years working for Sky Sports.
On his playing career he said “when I played against Newcastle United, even beyond the Kevin Keegan years when they were going for titles, there was a big atmosphere up here and you knew you had to weather that and deal with it. It was a proper football club, a proper ground.”
“Then all of a sudden, I finished my football career and came up here for 10 years working in this capacity, it was morbid. There was no connection between the team, the fans, the players, the owners. Everybody was just low, the energy had been sapped out of the place and I don’t know how many times I said it that, actually I didn’t look forward to coming up here and that’s actually a crime, to be fair.” He added when speaking on the Mike Ashley Era.
“That re-emerged for me today, it’s the first time I’ve been up here for quite a while and that’s the best atmosphere I’ve seen in my days working for Sky and that’s 11 years,”
It’s clear to see what Eddie Howe has done for Newcastle United since the takeover but credit must go to the owners as well for the job that has been done. Newcastle United are definitely the club to keep a close eye on over the next few years as you can see what they are building and with St. James rocking once again, the excitement for what could be is ever rising.
