Geordie accent is ‘second hardest to understand in UK’

Published

on

A new survey has claimed that the distinguishable Geordie accent was the second hardest to understand sitting behind the Glaswegian.

2,000 people took part in a survey into UK regional accents conducted by language learning platform Preply. The Tyneside accent had just over 20% of people finding it difficult to understand. With almost 40% struggling to understand the Glaswegian and 4% finding the Bristolian seeming confusing.

Auf Wiedersehen, Pet first hit our screens 40 years ago and since then had become a smash-hit comedy-drama. The show introduced the thick accent to audiences nationwide through Jimmy Nail (Oz), Tim Healy (Dennis), and Kevin Whatley (Neville). When showcasing the accent, they hid nothing. “Give owa’- ye divvent kna’ what ya’ talkin’ aboot!” brickies, Dennis and Oz would say (especially about the survey results!). Film and TV prior to this show would often have smoothed out the lingo making it more understandable for those not familiar with it.

Even to those who understand if it’s not their regional accent they often have a hard time trying to imitate. The Newcastle United star Miguel Almiron does an adequate “why aye, man” which he can be seen attempting on the football team’s social media.

The accent is widely heard on TV through the likes of Ant and Dec, Alan Shearer, and Cheryl Cole but despite this it seems to be leaving a lot of people asking the question. What did they just say? Maybe it’s the shear amount of slang which isn’t used in many other parts of the country that is leaving people clueless at certain phrases.

Despite it being so hard to understand, findings from the study also prove it to be the ‘second most desirable accent’ after London. It also got the ‘third most attractive’ after London again as well as Liverpool. Not being biased but those ratings are deserved.
