Gordon to expect a difficult return to Goodison Park

Thursday sees Everton take on Newcastle at Goodison Park on what will be Anthony Gordons first return since moving to Tyneside.
Gordon made his Premier League debut for Everton in January 2020 in a 1-1 draw against West Ham. He went on to make 78 appearances for the Toffees scoring 7 goals and getting 8 assists before making the move to St. James’ in January.
Everton fans didn’t take too kindly to this transfer though with him struggling for form under ex-boss Frank Lampard before him leaving the club for Newcastle. He took a wealth of flak which culminated in the youngster being called a ‘k***head’ as he was hounded outside the club’s stadium when driving away from the 2-1 defeat to Southampton back in January.
Clearly ready and raring to return to Goodison, in a since deleted post, Gordon posted on Instagram on Monday a photo of himself at St. James’ Park with the caption ‘See you Thursday’.
He will have all the motivation he needs for the match wanting to prove to those who hounded him wrong and to get his Newcastle United career up and running at his former club. The Magpies attacker will no doubt be prepared for a hostile reception when returning to Goodison Park for the first after leaving Merseyside under a cloud in January.
Everton added further fuel to the fire when he departed the club, with a short message when he left that reads: “Anthony Gordon has joined Newcastle United for an undisclosed fee. The 21-year-old forward leaves Everton after having submitted a formal transfer request.
“Gordon joined the club’s academy at the age of 11 and made his senior debut as a 16-year-old in a Europa League tie in December 2017. He went on to make 78 First-Team appearances, scoring seven goals.”
“It did hurt me, I’m not going to lie to you,” Gordon replied when addressing the club’s farewell.
“I’m a 22-year-old lad, I’m not going to handle every situation in life perfectly, but as a club with thousands of people working for them… After the part I played keeping them up — I won player’s player, manager’s player of the year — for them to not show me any credit or thank me, it hurt me a little bit.”
Despite Gordons motivation for the match, there’s no guarantee he will be in the starting 11 with challenges from Jacob Murphy and Joelinton who will feel aggrieved if they lose their place after being excellent in Sundays 6-1 demolition of Tottenham.
