International round-up: Mixed fortunes for Newcastle’s worldwide stars

With a busy international schedule of Nations League fixtures, World Cup Qualifiers and friendlies, Newcastle players including Trippier, Almirón and Guimarães have all been in action over the last couple of weeks.

Kieran Trippier is one of the few England players with his dignity intact after a poor run of games for the Three Lions. He played the full 90-minutes in England’s draws against both Germany and Italy.

His two caps make him the first Newcastle player to feature for England since Andros Townsend in 2016. He also became the Newcastle player to earn the most England caps while at the club since Michael Owen’s last international appearance in 2008.

Regular left-backs Luke Shaw and Ben Chilwell were both absent through injury and so the Newcastle right-back filled in on the left side of defence.

The Newcastle man was on the bench for England’s woeful 4-0 loss to Hungary last night. The shocking defensive performance came with Chelsea’s Reece James instead at left-back. This may play into Trippier’s hands as he vies for selection in a World Cup year.

Trippier put in a solid if unremarkable performance at left-back in the 1-1 draw against Germany last Tuesday. Four days later he was in action against the Azzuri, contributing to a clean sheet as England were held to a 1-1 draw.

As England lick their wounds from a shambolic display against Hungary, Newcastle’s Trippier can be quietly pleased with his international performances.

Elsewhere, Chris Wood was unfortunate not to make the World Cup with his native New Zealand. The Newcastle striker played the full game against Costa Rica in the All Whites’ crucial qualifying game. He was unable to find the target though as his side, down to 10 men, lost 1-0.

This meant that Costa Rica beat Wood’s New Zealand to the final spot in Qatar 2022. Despite the disappointment, the Magpies’ man will get a valuable rest over winter next season.

Paraguayan winger Miguel Almirón starred for his country, scoring two against South Korea. His brace secured a 2-2 draw in the friendly.

Bruno Guimarães featured as a late substitute for Brazil. He came on for rumoured transfer target Lucas Paqueta against South Korea and later Japan. The midfielder still had an impact, providing an assist in their 5-1 demolition of South Korea.

Newcastle’s Swedish defender Emil Krafth was on the receiving end of a 3-2 defeat to Norway on Sunday. The right-back played 90 minutes of the Scandinavian Nations League match up.

Jeff Hendrick was also in action for Ireland. He came on as a second half substitute in last night’s 1-1 Nations League draw with Ukraine. The midfielder also appeared in losses to Armenia and Ukraine, and had a cameo in a 3-0 win over Scotland.

How do you think Newcastle’s international contingent have fared? And has Trippier done enough to earn a starting spot for England?

Watch Yankuba Minteh score first goal for Feyenoord in 5-1 win on Sunday

Newcastle United loanee Yankuba Minteh has scored his first competitive goal for Feyenoord, scoring in Sunday’s 5-1 win over FC Utrecht.

After starting in their 6-1 win over Almere City last weekend, the Gambian teenager came off the bench and scored in stoppage time, rounding the goalkeeper and finishing calmly to seal another convincing victory for the Dutch champions.

This rounds off a positive few weeks for the 19-year-old winger, who was our first summer signing after sealing a £6m move from Danish side Odense.

Last month he helped spark a comeback draw away to local rivals Sparta Rotterdam, before starting his first Eredivisie game against Almere. Now, he’s come off the bench and bagged his first goal for the club.
