Legendary tree near Hadrian’s Wall’s ‘Sycamore Gap’ has been ‘felled’
One of the United Kingdom’s most renowned trees has met an unfortunate fate, as it appears to have been intentionally brought down overnight, according to authorities.
The Sycamore Gap tree, which stood as an iconic landmark near Hadrian’s Wall, adjacent to Crag Lough in Northumberland, has sadly ceased to stand, as recent images from the scene depict its fallen state.
Northumberland National Park Authority released a statement, confirming the distressing news: “Regrettably, the famous tree at Sycamore Gap has fallen overnight, and we suspect that it was deliberately felled. We are in collaboration with relevant agencies and partners who share an interest in this beloved North East landmark. Further information will be provided as soon as it becomes available.”
Sycamore Gap achieved acclaim when it was named English Tree of the Year in 2016 during the Woodland Trust’s awards, endearing itself to people from all corners of the globe.
During this period of investigation and recovery, Northumberland National Park Authority kindly requests that the public refrain from visiting the site. This precautionary measure will enable us to work with our partners in determining the circumstances surrounding this incident and ensuring the area’s safety.
This location once served as a popular subject for photographers and was often referred to as one of the most photographed trees in the entire country. Its loss is deeply felt by admirers and conservationists alike.
