Newcastle United could target Bundesliga star if deal for Sven Botman falls through

Freiburg star could become toon's top transfer target...

According to Sky Sports, Newcastle United could launch a bid for Bundesliga centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck if their deal for Lille defender Sven Botman falls through.

Freiburg star Schlotterbeck has been linked with a move to Tyneside by Sky Sports and could become Newcastle’s new top target if they continue to struggle to make ground in their deal for the Lille defender.

Botman has been deemed as the ‘number one’ target for the Magpies but Howe’s side have been left frustrated as their first bid of around $35million for the Dutch U21 international has been rejected.

This may force Newcastle to look elsewhere for defensive reinforcements…

Nico Schlotterbeck plays as a left sided centre-back for German side Freiburg and has played a key role in the club’s success so far this campaign as they sit third in the Bundesliga behind Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.

The 22-year-old received his first call-up to the German national side in 2021 and has been described as a commanding centre-back by many pundits. Schlotterbeck last played for SC Freiburg on the 18th December in their 2-1 victory over Champions league hopefuls Bayer Leverkusen.

The German defender stands 6ft 3′ tall and has received praise for his dominance in the air and ability to carry the ball out from the back – a style which matches that of Eddie Howe who is keen to improve his side at the back in their battle for survival.

Freiburg have the joint-best defensive record in the Bundesliga with league leaders Bayern which is a contrast to Newcastle who currently sit 19th in the Premier League having shipped 42 goals in their opening 19 games – the second worst record in the English top flight.

Watch Yankuba Minteh score first goal for Feyenoord in 5-1 win on Sunday

Newcastle United loanee Yankuba Minteh has scored his first competitive goal for Feyenoord, scoring in Sunday’s 5-1 win over FC Utrecht.

After starting in their 6-1 win over Almere City last weekend, the Gambian teenager came off the bench and scored in stoppage time, rounding the goalkeeper and finishing calmly to seal another convincing victory for the Dutch champions.

This rounds off a positive few weeks for the 19-year-old winger, who was our first summer signing after sealing a £6m move from Danish side Odense.

Last month he helped spark a comeback draw away to local rivals Sparta Rotterdam, before starting his first Eredivisie game against Almere. Now, he’s come off the bench and bagged his first goal for the club.
