Newcastle United ‘retain interest’ in PSG forward Hugo Ekitike

Newcastle United are keen to make a move on PSG star Hugo Ekitike – according to reports in France.
When the PIF – led consortium completed the takeover in late 2021, the club’s first transfer window with the new riches in January 2022 was when Ekitike was first confirmed as a target for the club. However, he opted to stay in France with his former club Reims, despite a deadline day move to St. James looking imminent.
Eddie Howe went back in for the forward last summer with Ekitike delivering another blow by further snubbing the club in favour of a move to Paris Saint-Germain on a season long loan, with a permanent move to the French capital to come at the end of the season.
Speaking on his move to PSG, the French U21 international said: “It is the choice of the heart! I’m French too, it’s the club of my homeland, of my country.”
“And then it’s a club where the greatest players evolve, where there is a quality and experienced staff, the desire to win all the titles in all competitions.”
“There is everything here for me to progress. All the ingredients are there, so it’s a logical choice for me to be here.”
“Finally, I myself have family in the Paris region, and I have always followed Paris Saint-Germain. All this made my desire to join this club very natural. It’s the right choice for me to be here.”
His move has not been what he hoped for though at the Parc de Princes with the 20-year-old making just 10 starts in all competitions with 4 goals and 3 assists, which is a good return in limited game time.
The forward has been criticised this season by French fans and media for his attitude and recent reports suggest he will be allowed to leave this summer.
FootMercato have suggested Ekitike wishes to remain at the club when his season-long loan deal is converted into a permanent move this summer, but L’Equipe have now reported the forward will be allowed to leave PSG at the end of the campaign and stated the French giants may favour a loan deal with a purchase option.
Newcastle are one of several clubs from around Europe that are said to remain interested in a move for the young forward, who has snubbed interest from the Magpies on two occasions in the last three transfer windows.
Although his attitude may be an issue, the quality of the young forward is there for everyone to see, and it could just be that Eddie Howe is the man to get the best out of him.
