Old and New Photos of the North East

Old and New photographs of the North East – where do you recognise?

There are great places to visit in Newcastle such as the Tyne Bridge and the famous football ground for Newcastle United Football Club, St James Park. Newcastle is also home to a number of historical attractions, museums and art galleries.

A brief history of Newcastle,

The city of Newcastle Upon Tyne was founded at the lowest point where the Tyne could easily be crossed. In 1080, the Normans built a wooden fort to protect the crossing. They also built a wooden bridge. (“New Castle” was rebuilt in stone in the 12th century). A small town soon grew up in the shadow of the new castle and was named after him.

The 16th century saw a boom in the export of coal and it overtook wool as the city’s main export. It is estimated that in the 1500s about 15,000 tons of coal were exported from Newcastle annually.

Coal exports continued to boom in the late 17th century, as did Newcastle’s shipbuilding industry. Rope making also flourished. In the years 1825-1840, the center of Newcastle was rebuilt.

It was mostly the work of three men, John Dobson, the architect, Richard Grainger, the builder, and John Clayton, the town clerk. All three have streets named after them. However, after 1945, as manufacturing contracted, new service industries grew. More and more people were employed in public administration, retail and education.

Today, Newcastle is one of England’s most vibrant cities with a world-renowned nightlife. The city center is almost centered around the spectacular St James Park football stadium, home of Newcastle United.

Most of Newcastle’s day visitors flock to Eldon Square shopping center where hundreds of retail outlets can be found. From there, many tend to go to The Gate for something to eat.

In the evening there is live music at the O2 Academy Newcastle and some truly Nordic plays at the Theater Royal and Tyne Theater & Opera House. Those who want to learn something are best advised to go to The Discovery Museum or Life Science Centre.
