Redrawn plans for Gateshead Quayside’s Sage arena unveiled

Proposals to build the huge complex had been approved late 2020. The plans include a 12,500-capacity arena and an international conference centre. But the dramatic increase in prices has meant that it has had to be redesigned with a controversial hotel cut from the scheme. The new plans total up to £330m in cost.
The new planning application has now been submitted to Gateshead council. It is expected to come before the local authority’s planning committee this summer. If successful building work could potentially start this autumn.
Planning consultants Lichfields wrote: “Due to operational and constructional requirements, it is proposed to replace the previously approved dual-branded hotel element of the Gateshead Quays development with a linear park, which will run in a north-south direction along the eastern boundary of the application site. The previously approved indoor arena and conference and exhibition centre are also proposed to undergo minor design amendments.”
They added: “The proposed development represents an ambitious and commercially grounded mixed-use scheme which will provide a critical mass of cultural and business facilities on the unique river frontage of Gateshead Quays. The proposals will build upon the existing landmark developments which encompass the surrounding area through the delivery of a 12,500- capacity indoor arena, approximately 5,700 sqm of exhibition space, and an extensive public realm which links all buildings, leisure and retail into one holistic environment.”
The new development will be known as The Sage, with Sage PLC having bought the naming rights for it. As a result of this, the current Sage concert venue which is next door is due to be renamed.

VAR official PUNISHED after Champions League PSG vs Newcastle howler

Following a contentious late penalty awarded to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) during their 1-1 draw against Newcastle, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) official involved in the decision has been replaced for an upcoming Champions League fixture. Tomasz Kwiatkowski, the Polish VAR official on duty at Parc des Princes, deemed a handball by Newcastle’s Tino Livramento, leading to Kylian Mbappe converting a 98th-minute penalty, salvaging a point for PSG managed by Luis Enrique.
See our reaction here:
This outcome potentially affects the Champions League group standings significantly, as PSG retains their second position, edging two points ahead of Newcastle, with one group game remaining. The penalty call didn’t originate from referee Szymon Marciniak but was reversed after Kwiatkowski prompted him to review the incident on the VAR screen.
Originally slated for VAR duty in the upcoming Real Sociedad versus RB Salzburg clash, Kwiatkowski has been replaced, according to reports. The replacement for the Polish official hasn’t been disclosed yet. Kwiatkowski, 45, frequently officiates in Poland’s top football league and possesses experience in European competitions.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe expressed dissatisfaction with the VAR decision, emphasizing its timing and impact, stating, “I feel it is a poor decision and it’s hugely frustrating for us, as you know how little time there is left in the game. There is nothing we can do about it now.”
For Newcastle to secure a spot in the last 16 of the Champions League, they must defeat AC Milan at St James’ Park on the final matchweek while hoping PSG doesn’t secure a victory against Borussia Dortmund.
