Top 6 Left Backs NUFC Could Sign this Summer

Published

NUFC Transfer news kieran tierney

Identifying the areas to improve on is key for the board this summer with left back being one of the key positions.

With European football pending, squad depth is going to be of the highest importance for Eddie Howe this summer and although Dan Burn has done a great job filling in for the magpies this season, getting in an out and out left back will be vital for progress next season.

Having a player of Kieran Trippier’s quality on the right-hand side, leaves the fans begging for a similar level of player on the left to give much needed balance to the squad. Having balance leads to more attacking output instead of relying so heavily on Trippier and would therefore create more space to move the ball forward.

That isn’t to take away from the work that Dan Burn has done since filling in the role of left back, but his capabilities are there to be seen, and having a naturally gifted left hand side player is so important for the club to gain this summer.

So, we have put together a list of 6 left backs Newcastle United could sign in the summer transfer window.

  1. Kieran Tierney (Arsenal)

25-year-old Scottish international Kieran Tierney signed for the gunners in 2019 from Celtic. 84 games and 12 goal involvements in that time, it seems crazy that Arsenal would be happy to move him on, but with Ukrainian defender Oleksandr Zinchenko being signed by the club at the start of the 22/23 season and injuries keeping him out of the squad, Tierney now must watch on from the bench. Making 20 appearances this season with 1 assist, the full back will be desperate to get some more minutes in next season. Newcastle United having already been linked with the full back, would be the perfect place for Tierney and as long as he stays fit, would be a great match for the club adding pace, drive, and quality on and off the ball.

  1. Mitchel Bakker (Bayer Leverkusen)

Netherlands U21 international Mitchel Bakker is second on this list, possessing strength, power, and a great attacking mind, the full back could be just the man Newcastle United need. At just 22 years old, Bayer Leverkusen left back Mitchel Bakker has 3 goals and 2 assists in 21 appearances this season in the Bundesliga and with a market value of £8 million, it would be a signing that could be a great bit of business for the club in an ever-competitive market. At 6 foot and with a good turn of pace to him, Bakker could be the answer to NUFC’s left back issue.

  1. Alex Grimaldo (Benfica)

27-year-old Spanish full back Alex Grimaldo certainly has the quality that would get fans excited, 5 goals and 13 assists this season in 44 games (all competitions) shows just how excellent his attacking output is. Mixing that with the solidity of Newcastle’s back four creates a defensive line that would terrify any opposition. Signing for Benfica from Barcelona’s B team in 2016 for just 2 million euros, his current market value sits at £22 million which shows just how good he has been in his time at Benfica. With Newcastle United’s financial safety, spending the money on him would by no means break the bank either.

  1. Javi Galan (Celta de Vigo)

Linked with a potential move to the club in January, 28-year-old Spaniard Javi Galan makes it on this list, 30 appearances and 4 goal involvements this season and would be available for around £12-15 million seems like a great fit for Eddie Howe in the summer. Signing for Celta Vigo in 2021 for 4 million euros, 64 games played since in that time with no injury records and possessing a great engine on him would make him a brilliant option for recruitment to assess in the window.

  1. Raphael Guerreiro (Borussia Dortmund)

29-year-old Portugal international Raphael Guerreiro would certainly be a marquee signing to make for Eddie Howe in the summer window, and with his contract expiring, it’s one that could be available on a free transfer which would be an unbelievable bit of business from the club. Blistering pace and an incredible attacking output would make him be one of the first names on the team sheet for Newcastle and with 5 goals and 12 assists in just 28 appearances this season for Dortmund, he would be a great signing for Newcastle United and with links being made already, this is a transfer that could be perfect Eddie Howe.

  1. Ian Maatsen (Burnley)

21-year-old Chelsea loanee Ian Maatsen is currently in the championship with high flying Burnley under Vincent Kompany. With 32 appearances this season, 4 goals and 6 assists, he is certainly one to look at for Newcastle’s left back problem. Fast with the ball at his feet and always looking to progress up the field, Maatsen is one that could be worth taking the risk on as although Championship to Premier League is a big step up, we think he is more than capable of flourishing under Eddie Howe for Newcastle United.
